In his article on “Heroes of Westward Ho!” in the September 2017 Kipling Journal, Rodney Atwood cites a book previously unknown to me: H.A. Tapp’s “United Services College 1874-1911” (Privately printed, 1933). As someone who has long been fascinated by “Stalky & Co” — I began my first trip to Britain, in 1971, with a pilgrimage to Westward Ho! — I had of course read Dunsterville’s “Stalky’s Reminiscences” and Beresford’s “Schooldays with Kipling”, and so I would certainly want to read what Major Tapp had to say. But his book seemed unobtainable: Amazon couldn’t supply it, and the few copies in American libraries were likely to be in special collections and thus unavailable on interlibrary loan. After a bit of web-surfing I found a virtually complete copy (two pages are lacking) of Tapp’s book at <http://www.westwardhohistory.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/United-Services-College-book-1.pdf> A supplementary volume (not mentioned in Mr Atwood’s article) can be found at <http://www.westwardhohistory.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/United-Services-College-book-2.pdf> These files are both readable and dowloadable. I mention this in case anyone on this list shares my interest in the USC and would like to read Major Tapp’s little book.
