Hi everyone,

I can't resist replying to let you all know that I'm helping with a Fun Palaces event in Burgess Park, Southwark, south London and I hope those of you with small children will bring them along!

They've got a general theme of machines that fly - zeppelins and rockets. I'm helping with the rockets part - I'll be teaching you how to make honeycomb panel (which satellites use), multi-layer insulation (that blanket thing that covers Apollo and Hubble) and hopefully a parachute (with bin liners and string). None real - all home crafts, etc (bring the nets from your bags of onions or oranges if possible, please....) but I'm making information leaflets on the science and engineering involved as well as how to make them. I'll also be bringing some Society for Popular Astronomy articles I've written.

The link is here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fun-palaces-at-the-old-library-part-of-the-zeppelin-1917-festival-tickets-37619343469?aff=es2 but there's actually no need to register for the Fun Palace; just come along to the library at the edge of Burgess Park any time between 1 and 3.

It would be lovely if a few of you could make it and/or spread the word.

Thanks so much!

Alice

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Fun Palaces events

Dear all,

For those interested, there is a Fun Palaces weekend <http://www.bristol.ac.uk/blackwell/events/2017/fun-palaces.html> this weekend 7-8 October (!) all around UK, with community-led events on science and arts.

In Bristol, Fun Palaces will offer a creative and playful exploration of health science. It is hosted by the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute and will launch Healthy City Week<http://bristolgreencapital.org/healthy-city-week-2017-launch/> with activities at Bristol University, across Bristol and beyond!

Join in to explore five health themes with local people and academics from the University of Bristol: air pollution, food, wellbeing, smoking and active travel.

Do so through FREE activities including:

  *   customising a YoBike at Wellspring Community Centre;
  *   nurturing your wellbeing through craft workshops (and a treasure hunt!) in Avonmouth;
  *   exploring mental health through iPhone photography and a portrait making installation on the Severn Beach train;
  * covering the Bristol Ferry in pom poms with your advice for a healthy city and so much more!

If you can't make the weekend there are some additional Fun Palaces taking place during Healthy City Week:

Tuesday 10 October:  a fitness bootcamp in Castle Park from 12 - 1pm and a print-making workshop at Avonmouth Community Centre from 5:30 - 7:30pm;

Wednesday 11 October: a sun photo workshop at Avonmouth Community Centre from 3:00 - 4:30pm as well as a whole host of sustainability talks and events.

See the main Healthy City Week programme here<http://bristolgreencapital.org/project_cat/healthy-city-week/>.

Find out details for the weekend via our map here: bit.ly/FPmap2017<http://bit.ly/FPmap2017> and follow us on Twitter @Fun_Bristol #HealthyBristol #funpalacesbristol for live updates and news.

All the best and have fun!
