A wonderful acquisition indeed.

I'd add that the Manuscript shows only 10 of 12 Zodiac Signs paired according to the entry method with the Labors of the Months. January/Aquarius and February/Pisces are missing. A good source on this iconography is:
Hourihane 2007

Paul's suspicion is well justified. Cancer and Scorpio were rarely depicted realistically at that time. For instance, the Royal Portal Archivolts of Chartres have an eight-legged Scorpio and Cancer, while the North Porch shows Scorpio as a six-legged lizard and Cancer with ten legs.

Royal Portal Scorpio
Royal Portal Cancer
North Porch Cancer
North Porch Complete Zodiac

Interestingly, the Gemini figure in the Manuscript  (f.10 r.) shows the Twins behind a large shield and hand on chest - a pose so similar to the Royal Portal Gemini that I suspect the illuminator must have seen or heard of it.

Hi Theresa

The second vignette to the right of each page relates to the apparent progression of the sun through the traditional astrological constellations.

The six-legged creature on f.10v is just to the right of the text 'sun in Cancer' and is a crab.
It's six-legged friend on f.12v is to the right of the text 'sun in Scorpio'

I suspect the illuminator had never seen either in real life!

Cheers

What I’d like to know is: what are those six-legged creatures that appear more than once in the Saints’ calendar??

Splendid! Not specializing in England, C13, or MSS, I wonder: is the juxtaposition of a wyvern and the Trinity on fol. 101r. a standard thing?

A rare and beautiful Psalter produced in thirteenth-century London has been acquired by the British Library. The Mostyn Psalter-Hours can now be viewed online: http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=Add_MS_89250
