My current research is on the relationship between the unlawful activity of clipping coins and alchemical practices in early modern Naples. The definition in the Vocabolario Treccani, though, is not precise as it does not make clear that clipping a coin was in most cases a crime, i.e. scraping particles of gold or silver off a coin, thus unlawfully reducing its value. Incidentally, this is the reason why coins came to have reeded edges, at it is still common nowadays. Best, G.I.
