There is the excavation of AD1184 at Glastonbury and (not sure if this counts) the exhumation of St cuthbert in the C9 at Lindisfarne. Getting earlier but not UK is the discovery of the True cross by helena mother iof the Roman emperor Constantine in AD 326-8. I was going to claim the Egyptian Khaemweses c1213 BC but he was more of a conservation officer.

Hi Isobel

I am dieing to learn more about the 'event' that took place in St Albans c. AD1000. I suspect that it was some lord ordering minions to seek out the remains of St Alban that somehow failed to result in a 4 volume account of the findings painstakingly penned on vellum.

The earliest archaeological ‘event’ recorded in the St Albans UAD (ie which could be more or less dated, with body responsible, where it took place, and with a record of what was found) dates to c.AD 1000 (has anyone got an earlier one?). There are one or two medieval events within the UAD area and some 18th century ones, which could be mapped with precision and provided data, so they all count.

Subject: Red sky question (not) - number of archaeological excavations?

Hi all,

A friend (a real one) has asked if I knew if anyone has or had worked out with a relatively high degree of confidence as to how many excavations, evaluations and watching briefs have taken place in the UK? There are numerous problems with this question, not least of all ‘since when’? The earliest dated excavation listed on the city’s HER is dated to the mid-19th century.

I would say answers on a postcard, but it may be a either very small or very large. In anticipation:

All the best,

Grahame
