Dear colleagues,

Following an initial pilot with 14 institutions, the Jisc digital capability discovery tool (beta)<http://bit.ly/digcapdiscovery> is being completely redesigned with engaging new questions for staff in different roles, and a highly visual delivery platform.

We are now looking for institutions who want to pilot the new tool and associated resources with their staff. The pilot will run from December 2017 to May 2018, and through it we hope to continue to learn from your experiences to further improve our offer. A student version of the discovery tool will be available for initial testing as part of this pilot.

If you would like to get involved please complete this sign up form<https://jisc-beta.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/digital-capability-tool-2017-18-sign-up> by 31st October 2017 to register your interest.

Why digital capability?

Ensuring that staff and students have the digital capabilities needed to live, learn and work in today's digital society is of increasing importance. If their educational experience is to give students the right opportunities, staff themselves need to be digitally capable, and able to design digital opportunities into the curriculum.

What is the discovery tool and how can it help me?

The Jisc digital capability discovery tool has been designed to support staff across higher and further education and skills. It helps individuals to identify and reflect on their digital capability - particularly in relation to their work roles - and to develop their confidence through tailored feedback, 'next steps', and links to resources. Questions and feedback are mapped to the Jisc Six elements<http://ji.sc/digicap_ind_frame> digital capability framework to provide a holistic view of the skills required. The discovery tool can also help managers and team leaders understand what support would be most helpful for their staff.

What differences can I expect to see in the new version of the tool?

You can find out more about the outcomes of the initial pilot with 14 institutions in a summary post from Helen Beetham on what we learned<https://digitalcapability.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2017/08/31/discovery-tool-what-we-learned-and-where-we-go-next/>. You can also read more about the journeys taken by six of the 14 pilot institutions in a post from Clare Killen introducing these 'institutional stories<https://digitalcapability.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2017/08/31/piloting-the-digital-capability-discovery-tool-six-new-institutional-stories/>'.

In summary, the changes being explored include:

* A move to a dynamic new platform - the Potential.ly<https://www.potential.ly/> platform which has a modern design interface, enhanced question types, proven self-assessment options and visual flair

* Tailored question sets, for HE teaching staff, FE and skills teaching staff, non-teaching staff, and a new student-facing version (other question sets are in the pipeline)

* A clear focus on the capabilities required in a professional educational context

* Enhanced institutional dashboard options with automated, anonymous reports to inform organisational planning
