Dear Colleagues,

In fall 2018 Rhode Island School of Design will launch two new MA programs in the interdisciplinary liberal arts. Nature–Culture–Sustainability Studies (NCSS) and Global Arts and Cultures (GAC). These programs build on RISD’s tradition of rigorous education in the humanities and social sciences to offer dynamic frameworks for critical inquiry. Emphasizing theoretical grounding and self-directed research, these 1.5-year programs invite students to produce innovative scholarship across a range of academic and professional fields.

Students in the Nature–Culture–Sustainability Studies graduate program will develop methods for addressing urgent environmental issues in relation to cultural objects and processes. They will conduct interdisciplinary research in focus areas in the environmental humanities and the environmental social sciences that include but are not limited to: Anthropocene studies, climate change cultures, post-humanisms, green urbanisms and sustainable design futures.

GAC offers a foundation in critical global studies, theories of representation, and interdisciplinary research practices in the humanities and social sciences. Students pursue hybrid research projects in such focus areas as aesthetics, politics and theory; display and exhibition cultures; material, visual and performance cultures; and modern and contemporary arts and criticism.

Led by faculty representing a wide range of backgrounds and research expertise, these programs are designed so that NCSS and GAC students work closely with mentors in multiple fields and with one another to develop reciprocal frameworks for extending critical conversations and research. Students also benefit from exposure to an immersive art and design culture and interaction with makers in RISD’s 16 art and design-based master’s programs.

Graduates of the GAC and NCSS programs will be well positioned to make vital contributions in the realms of cultural development and preservation, public policy, education, environmental advocacy, urban planning and more. They will also be poised to pursue advanced doctoral study in humanities and social science fields.

Please consider recommending these programs to current students or recent graduates with an interest in critical contemporary issues and interdisciplinary research. We are currently accepting applications through January 10, 2018, and welcome questions from potential candidates.
