Hello. I must say when I read Valerià's email I started to write some lines in the same terms as Simone. Yet, no matter how valuable the discussions of 'not being critical', of 'BBC as a non-partisan source' and even of which 'non-partisan sources' should be referred to in relation to this issue are, they certainly lead us into different path from the one which probably matters the most. Anyway, just to share with you some ideas, and viewing this issue from neighbouring Portugal, it is clear to me that a) the subject is not high in the public or political agenda here; b) national political issues of circunstancial importance are the ones being debated in the media, especially after local elections (which took place also on October 1st); c) street comments referring to what will happen to Barcelona in the Champions league seem to get all the attention in cafés and streets (at least these are the ones I seem to be hearing); d) There is a slight emotion here when tv images show people in Catalonia singing 'Grandola Vila Morena' holding a carnation, referring to Portugal's 1974 revolution, which is not so distant in time and memory. But overall, what is taking place in Catalonia could be taking place in the Balkans or even in the Caucasus, and it would not make much of a difference here, at least in the ways in which this is being discussed and looked at (there are some exceptions of course). Naturally possible consequences will have much stronger impacts on the western part of Iberia (and in Europe overall). What I can say from where I stand is that this is not high in the agenda. Can't recall to see any debate in the University about this issue in the last 12 months for example. Greetings, João João Sarmento, PhD Assistant Professor, Geog. Dept., Univ.
