The 47th Wordsworth Summer Conference,
Monday 6 August to Thursday 16 August 2018

We are writing to let you know about our glittering programme of lecturers for the Wordsworth Summer Conference 2018. As in previous years our venue will be Rydal Hall, an eighteenth-century country house with spacious and comfortable rooms, a terraced garden, and spectacular waterfalls viewed from a state-of-the art grotto. Our exciting and varied programme will extend over a full ten days in two five-day units, 6-11 August and 11-16 August: you can attend for either of those five-day units, or settle in to enjoy the extraordinary full ten-day experience.

First, we’re delighted to say that Dame Gillian Beer, who had to withdraw at short notice from our 2017 programme, has confirmed she’ll be speaking in 2018 along with Madeleine Callaghan, Phillip Connell, Jessica Fay, Mina Gorji, Julian North, Seamus Perry and Michael Rossington. From America we will be welcoming lecturers Theresa M. Kelley, Adam Potkay and Charles Rzepka. Our Japanese lecturer will be Kimiyo Ogawa, and the Wordsworth Conference Foundation trustee lecturer will be Stacey McDowell.

The 2018 programme will begin with an evening visit to the Wordsworth Trust’s museum at Town End, Grasmere, including a magical candle-lit visit to Dove Cottage. Each day will offer a range of brilliant lectures and papers, morning and evening, and in the afternoons we offer challenging ‘A’ climbs on the Lake District Fells, ‘B’ walks along picturesque local byways, and ‘C’ excursions to literary, cultural and historical sites. Ten bursaries for postgraduate students will be offered, each worth £350.

Over ten days we offer our standard shared twin ensuite room for around £130 per person per night, including all meals, coffees and teas.

Watch out for our new website (we’ll tell you when it’s live) and, in the meantime, please keep up with news about the Wordsworth Summer Conference, the Winter School, and the Wordsworth Conference Foundation at
