Dear All,
A few colleagues have asked to summarise the above. I have had so many replies, that this is going to prove difficult, however, I have tried below to include the most relevant
and important points suggested.
·
First, have a loan policy and procedure in place, Spectrum guidance is a good starting point
·
This is also useful
http://www.museumsassociation.org/collections/smarter-loans
·
You might need to get loan items valued . Also make sure you have a high quality image of the paintings before they go on loan.
·
Get the paintings valued and checked status for travel by Conservator
·
Loan agreement- stipulating loan period, insurance, transport etc. I also say No photographing without written permission (to safeguard your copyright). If you are loaning to a national museum, they
might generate the loan agreement, so just check it includes clauses that address the loaner’s own stipulations such as humidity, light etc...
·
Ask to see the Borrowers "Standard Facilities Report"- apparently, this is standard procedure according to English Heritage. The document gives details of where and how your paintings would be displayed.
·
Ask the borrower to organise and pay for the transport, and for the insurance of the items while at their venue.
·
They should use a specialist art mover, who will insure the items while in transit and understand the care needed during transportation
·
The National Gallery stipulate clearly on their website what their terms and conditions for loans are, so this is also another useful resource
https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/about-us/the-gallery-nationwide/borrowing-from-the-national-gallery-loan-conditions-uk
There may be other issues to consider which I haven’t mentioned above, but this is a brief summary, and I may well discover more as research this using the resources cited above.
Best Regards,
Michele
