Thinking about a career in heritage? This one-day seminar for arts and humanities PhD students will help you plan for a variety of job roles in this wide ranging sector, which covers museums, galleries, historic buildings,
archaeology, archives and conservation.
Our expert line-up of speakers will share their own experiences of working in the sector, and how their PhD provided them with the transferable skills, knowledge and experience needed. The programme will cover:
- Types of heritage – an introduction to the heritage sector and what we mean when we talk about heritage;
- Breaking in – participants will be encouraged to think about what skills and experience they may need to prepare them for careers in the heritage sector;
- Beyond curating – an introduction to the different careers available in the sector, from a curator position to a job in development;
- Pathways not pipelines – participants will hear from a range of heritage professionals about their career path since completing their PhD.

Walking tour
There will be a walking tour in the afternoon, which will include Museum of Edinburgh, St Cecilias Hall, University of Edinburgh, Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and will finish with drinks at Usher’s of Edinburgh, 32b West

Eligibility
The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland registered at a SGSAH
member HEI (SGSAH will cover reasonable travel expenses from home HEIs). |
