I meant to add that one of our new storage facilities is going to be in the same building as Oxford University's science library. This is partly to enable better (and safer!) access for students of history or science degrees, visiting researchers and tour groups.

Hello,

I am a big fan of Grampian Transport Museum’s store – it is on their site but it is ace. They did it in partnership with First Transport, which has a collection of historic buses and it has garage facilities, workshop and meeting/education space. They have a big volunteer base working on collections, do BTS things  and use the facilities during big site events i think.

My favourite bit is that they went with a design and build company, so it was cheap and mega-insulated. They have environmental control kit ut have rarely needed it. Mike Ward, the urator there, told me it got down to minus 15 the first winter and it never came on, although admittedly their collections can arguably tolerate lower temperatures.

We’ve also got a new facility in Aberdeen Treasure Hub – designed to be publically accessible with BTS tours weekly, education space and research/volunteer space. Contact Shona Elliott – details on aagm.co.uk (sorry, on maternity leave hence don't have details to/emailing at weird time).

Hi Tehmina,

Anne was spot on about Oxford Univerity Museums having off-site collections storage facilities shared by multiple museums. The reserve collections of the Museum of the History of Science and the Pitt Rivers Museum are currently housed in an old power station, formerly used by the Ashmolean. Our large objects are being moved to a more suitable off-site storage space on their own, while the small ones are going to be stored in a new location together with Pitt Rivers Museum objects. You can follow the progress of our move project on our blog: http://blogs.mhs.ox.ac.uk/insidemhs/ as well as on Twitter and Instagram.

Hello all,

A Friday query about the fun subject of off-site collections storage.

Do you or do you know of any museums or similar institutions with off-site collections storage which is also used as a venue for activities i.e. not just warehousing?

It might be collections-based activity, training or it might be something completely unrelated.

Do you know of any museums who share their collections storage with other institutions? Such as a local business or university?

If you have any great examples, not just the high profile collections centres but others that may not be well known about I'd be really happy to hear about them.

I'd also be really happy to share back the findings on this list.

Best wishes,

Tehmina
