Hi Tehmina,

I think that Oxford university museums share a new off-site collections store but I might be wrong. The Pitt Rivers Museum has its own Twitter account https://twitter.com/Pitt_Stores tracking the progress of moving into the new site.

Best wishes,
Anne

Hi Tehmina,

You probably already know about Blythe House, as you mention the high profile ones below, but in case not: Science Museum, British Museum & V&A, with the V&A textiles centre and I think some tours go on (although I’m not 100% on this; I can only speak from the BM side of things, and they don’t, but I recall hearing something about the other two running them). Study sessions definitely happen in the V&A and BM parts, and I’d assume Science Museum too. The building is also used as a film set fairly often.

Many thanks,
Lowri

Hi Tehmina,
We have an off-site store, it has housed our Costume and Textile and Social History stores for about 20 years, but 4 years ago we moved our other collections there (Geology, Archaeology and Natural History). As part of the specification, we designated one space as an office/workroom which could also accommodate c.15 volunteers and members of the public. Since then we have had regular 'Behind the scenes' tours of the collections (including a 1960s themed session), training sessions on collections management etc., local specialist group meetings and a couple of schools events (as well as regular collections-based work with volunteers and access for researchers). Although physical access to some stores is restricted on H&S grounds (objects as trip hazards etc.), we can get people into see something of most of the collections and we do bring objects into the workroom space if we can't show the items in situ.

Regards,

Sara

Hello all,

A Friday query about the fun subject of off-site collections storage.

Do you or do you know of any museums or similar institutions with off-site collections storage which is also used as a venue for activities i.e. not just warehousing?

It might be collections-based activity, training or it might be something completely unrelated.

Do you know of any museums who share their collections storage with other institutions? Such as a local business or university?

If you have any great examples, not just the high profile collections centres but others that may not be well known about I'd be really happy to hear about them.

I'd also be really happy to share back the findings on this list.

Best wishes,
Tehmina
