This course introduces participants to the powerful statistical package, IBM SPSS, and its use for data management and simple descriptive statistics. This introductory course does not assume any prior knowledge of SPSS or even statistics and is designed for students, researchers, people working in social research settings or anyone who needs to work with quantitative data or be able to understand simple SPSS output. This course is an entirely hands-on, computer-based course taught through practical exercises. It provides a grounding in the logical underpinnings of mixed methods research; surveys the range of mixed methods research designs; shows how mixed methods research is used in applied and policy-related work; relates principles and techniques to digital resources that facilitate mixed methods research; and discusses hot topics in current debates in the mixed methods community. Presentations are interleaved with substantial group exercises and with a number of shorter interactive segments. It is designed for researchers who have previously attended an introductory training workshop in NVivo and/or who have been using the software for a real project for some time. Participants working with any version or edition of NVivo can attend this course. The day comprises discussion, demonstration and hands-on sessions and combines group and individual work. We refresh straightforward uses of software tools and cover more sophisticated uses of tools as required. Participants bring copies of their own NVivo projects to work with during the day and there will be an opportunity for each participant to talk with the Tutor about their own work. Participants are asked ahead of time for information about their progress with NVivo and the aspects for which they require support such that the workshop can be tailored specifically to the needs of those attending.
