There's a very long, very drab Russian film, Andrei Rublev. Let's just say it won't be declared the feel-good movie of the season, but the construction and consecration of bells is big in it. There is a prayer for blessing bells in the Great Book of Needs (Gk. Euchologion, Sl. Trebnik). The link goes to an English translation from the Slavonic by St. Tikhon's monastery. I don't know if the prayer appears in a Greek version or not.

Nothing to do with your question, but on the enduring resonance (ahem) of church bells in Icelandic culture and worship, you might want to read Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness' great novel Iceland's Bell (Íslandsklukkan), in which the cutting down of ecclesiastical bells at Thingvellir (the site of the nation's medieval parliament) is a pivotal scene. The novel takes place in the late 17th century and the bells are removed at the behest of the Danish king. Thus, their removal is equated with Denmark's theft of Icelanders' dignity (Laxness wrote around the time of the country's independence).

Greetings all, 

An Icelandic commentary on Mass and the Hours singles out bells for special attention, noting that they are blessed with a longer prayers than other items, 'as if baptised. (they are) washed in Holy Water outside 4 times and inside 4 times, with blessed/consecrated salt and holy oil, and after that chrismed with the highest chrism equally many times, just as a man is confirmed after baptism and receives the spirit of strength to do good works. So (the bell) is confirmed so that God's power will accompany it and its sound will attract angels and drive away devils and all harmful things.'  

Does anyone know of parallels to this? My Latin isn´t up to creating a translation and searching. What intrigues me is that, while I have not run across anything like this before, I have run across a prohibition against baptizing bells - which seems almost to be what is going on here!
