hi all,

this is more focused on the technical setup rather than the content, but might be useful anyway.

The Nordic Museum in Stockholm and the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh use the same beacon setup for our audio guide apps. Rather than associating each beacon to a specific object/item on display, the beacons are used to place users in a region. This is a more flexible approach when objects are moved around and could also used together with a museum map. Our museum (like many others) has thick stone walls making it infeasible to use GPS for location services.

The code (iOS only) as well as the companion app to administer the beacons are all open source. More here:

Hi Catherine and all

We carried out a Nesta funded research project exploring the uses of iBeacon technology in museums working with Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and Bristol University. The ‘Hidden Museum’ app we developed as part of this used iBeacons to encourage heads-up exploration and interaction with under-visited areas of the museum.

I’d be very happy to chat in more detail if you have any specific questions.

Best wishes
Lorna

Hi all,

We have iBeacon technology at the Victoria Gallery and Museum, Liverpool.

Our app is available to download on the App Store or Google Play. Visitors can borrow an iPad from reception or bring in their own device to use around the gallery and we also have one permanently stationed in one of our gallery spaces. The tour can also be fully accessed at home away from the ibeacons.

Our tour is focused on the history and architecture of the Victoria Building where our museum is housed. The ibeacons provide visitors with additional information about different areas or objects as they move around the space and the tour has been well received.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch!

Kind regards,

Kim

Andrew,

If relevant and of interest, we are working with Bluetooth beacons on a large open-air site, to provide geolocation for the tablets carried by our visitors which contain all of our interpretation.

Hello everyone,

We’re looking at trialling some beacons here at the National Gallery of Ireland, and I was wondering if anyone has seen it done particularly well anywhere, content-wise? We’re still at a very early stage of content discussions here, but we know that we don’t want to duplicate material that people can already find on our website and audio guides. Has anyone had success (or failure!) with different types of content? And for those of you who have implemented it, what has the take-up been like for the download of the app? All advice from the group gratefully received!

Apologies if this has been covered by the group recently!

Thanks,
Catherine
