Dear Colleague, 

I am writing to invite you to attend the popular music research and performance event Canterbury Sound: Music, Place and Myth taking place on Saturday 28 October 2017 in Augustine Hall, Canterbury. (canterbury.ac.uk/canterburysound)

The term ‘Canterbury sound’ is used to refer to the signature psychedelic and progressive rock developed by artists such as Caravan, and Soft Machine. This event explores Canterbury as a metaphor and reality, a symbolic space of music inspiration.

The programme includes talks from: 

• Professor Andy Bennett (Griffith University, QLD, Australia)
• Geoffrey Richardson (member of Caravan)
• Aymetic Leroy (author of L'école de Canterbury and the Calyx web platform)
• Phil Howitt (Facelift fanzine founder)
• Brian Hopper (member of Wilde Flowers and SoupSongs
• Event co-ordinators Dr Asya Draganova, Professor Shane Blackman, and PhD candidate Alan Payne 
• ... and many others. 

Performances from: 

• SoupSongs, assembled with the participation of ‘Canterbury sound’ founding figure Robert Wyatt 
• Lapis Lazuli, an instrumental group who are currently enjoying the success of their fourth album and combine elements of jazz, funk and world fusion to the listener with ever-changing landscapes, tight grooves and dynamic harmonic interplay.
• Jack Hues and the Quartet, currently working on their project COLLABORATIONS: a series of new recordings which began with the release of A Thesis on The Ballad in 2015
• Koloto (Maria Sullivan), an artist who explores the 'Canterbury Sound' aesthetics in the context of electronic music 

This event seeks to demonstrate the development of the ‘Canterbury Sound’ as an inter-generational, local, and transnational cultural phenomenon.
