italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

The Department of European Studies at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in French and Italian studies, to start in August 2018. Research specialization is open, though fields of particular interest include pre-20th century studies with a focus on history of ideas, science and technology, biopolitics, material and visual culture, or other relevant areas. We seek a dynamic colleague who can complement, strengthen, and expand the competencies of our department and contribute to fostering innovative collaborations with faculty in the College of Arts and Letters and other units on campus. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be able to teach across the undergraduate curriculum in French and Italian, as well as the graduate curriculum in French. The faculty member may also teach in the European Studies undergraduate program. The faculty member is expected to participate in department and university service and to contribute to curricular development.

 

Required Qualifications: Applicant must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate field no later than December 31, 2017.  Native or near-native fluency in French and Italian and excellent knowledge of English. A record of scholarly research with evidence of participation in professional growth activities consistent with experience in the field combined with a strong research program.  Ability and willingness to teach courses in French at all levels of the curriculum (graduate and undergraduate). Ability and willingness to teach courses in Italian at all levels of the curriculum (undergraduate). Ability and willingness to engage actively in departmental and university service. Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

 

Preferred qualification: Ability and willingness to teach pre-20th century topics in undergraduate courses in French and Italian and in graduate courses in French.

 

Desired Qualifications: Previous experience in the U.S. university system. Ability and willingness to direct a language program and to serve as undergraduate/graduate advisor. Ability to contribute to undergraduate and graduate program revision. Ability and willingness to develop innovative interdisciplinary courses. Ability and willingness to teach interdisciplinary courses in European Studies.

 

The ideal candidate should have a track record of teaching college-level courses in both French and Italian. The faculty member would be expected to contribute to graduate-level teaching in French in his or her area(s) of research interest. In addition, the new hire should expect to serve on master’s thesis or exam committees.
