Dear All,

Apologies for cross-posting.

I'd like to let you know about the publication of a new book about authenticity, a topic which is highly relevant to the study and application of heritage and museum management. The book includes chapters on historic cities, urban heritage and heritage experiences and discusses authenticity in the context of copies, reenactments, reproductions, recreations and reconstructions.

New book: Authentic and Inauthentic Places in Tourism: From Heritage Sites to Theme Parks.

With the rise of post-truth and fake news, a thorough examination of authenticity has never been so relevant. This book explores the geography of authenticity and tourism in the city, wilderness, rural idyll, and the seaside resort; exploring historic sites, urban heritage, museums, site specific art, hipsterisation, gentrification, iconic architecture, film location tourism, photographed and eventful places. Using a range of global destinations including Venice and New York and attractions from stave churches to Michelangelo's David, the book asks how aspects of authenticity such as nostalgia, interpretation, memorialisation,  reproduction and reconstruction affect placemaking. By critically investigating theories of objective authenticity, hyperreality and the fake-real, the book reveals the magically real castle, the poignant replica, the authenticated theme park and the unmasked carnival.
