Posting Title: Research Assistant 3 (Advanced Level Technician) in Low-temperature Thermochronology

              

The Center for Integrative Geosciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time laboratory technician in the area of (U-Th-Sm)/He low-temperature thermochronology.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The successful candidate will be expected to (1) train and supervise visiting students and researchers, (2) contribute to methodological development of instrumentation and applications of thermochronology within the Earth sciences, (3) conduct routine laboratory duties and instrument maintenance, 4) provide analytical support in (U-Th-Sm)/He thermochronology for the broader Earth science community at the regional and national level, and (5) participate in UConn community outreach activities to encourage interest and awareness of deep-time, geochronology, and Earth processes. This position is funded for five years through the National Science Foundation Earth Sciences: Laboratory Technician Support program, contingent on the availability of funds. The new Basin Analysis and Helium Thermochronology Center at UConn features a customized SCLM gas extraction and measurement system and Thermo iCAP ICP mass spectrometer. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

B.S. in the sciences or engineering and four to five years of post-degree experience, or an M.S. and two to four years of post-degree experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Preferred qualifications include a Doctorate (PhD) in Geosciences or related disciplines and research experience in noble gas thermochronology. The ideal candidate has experience with ultra-high vacuum gas extraction lines, noble gas measurement and data analysis, ICP-MS isotope analysis, maintaining laboratory equipment, laboratory management, training students, and standard lab safety protocols. The technician should also have sufficient knowledge of (U-Th)/He methods, instrumentation, and data analysis. Additional experience working productively in a research team environment is preferred.

 

APPOINTMENT TERMS

 

This is an 11-month, full time, annually renewable position with healthcare benefits. Anticipated appointment date is as early as December 1, 2017. Salary range is commensurate with education and experience in accordance with NRSA rates. Reappointment for up to five years is contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Continued appointment beyond five years is at the discretion of the Dean.
