One subtlety is that with charities, donations and grants don't count to your turnover, they are interested in your trading turnover.

HI Verity and all

A lot of VAT is very complicated but this bit isn’t.

If your organisation is VAT registered than you have to charge VAT. If your organisation is not VAT registered, then you MUST NOT charge VAT. If you do you are breaking the law.

Your finance officer will be able to tell you if your organisation is VAT registered.

If your organisation’s business turnover exceeds about £80k pa (you can find the exact figure on the HMRC website), then basically you have to be VAT registered. If turnover is less than £80k pa you can still register for VAT if this would be financially useful to you.

IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE to VAT if you are a charity or not, unless you are engaged in a range of very specific and basically health-care related activities. If you’re doing these then you should know about the relevant VAT rules. If you’re not then you don’t need to know about them.

There are all kinds of misconceptions out there about charities and VAT, usually along the line that non VAT registered charities don’t have to pay VAT on goods and services. This is (with the rare exceptions mentioned above) wrong.

You can get lots of information (and I mean lots) from the VAT section of the HMRC website - but this is best left for you finance manager/officer to deal with.

I know about this as I’ve been running a VAT registered business for twenty odd years, and have been the treasurer of a couple of (non VAT registered) voluntary organisations to boot.

Hope this helps

All the best

Richard.
