I don’t think they are an entirely volunteer run organisation. I share Pat’s worries about this. The ARA won’t advertise in its recruitment bulletin posts that
don’t pay a certain amount and yet here we have what sounds to be a significant professional role being advertised on the listserv as suitable for an unqualified volunteer.
I am not a lawyer but I wonder where this leaves the minimum wage obligation as well.

Patricia,
It does like a lot to ask of a volunteer and a student, however if this is a completely Volunteer run organisation this would mitigate this.
Just a thought

Is anyone else concerned about the level of work a volunteer is being asked to carry out in the message below?
This is clearly a significant role which requires a great deal of expertise and knowledge, that of a professional archivist/recordkeeper. Should we, as a profession, be supporting
on the listservs this kind of (non) employment?
Is there a role for ARA in monitoring this type of advertisement, which downgrades the role of the professional archivist/recordkeeper?

Subject: Volunteer Opportunity at Edinburgh World Heritage
An interesting and unique opportunity has arisen at Edinburgh World Heritage that would particularly suit a student currently undertaking
study in Records and Archives Management.
Edinburgh World Heritage is an independent charity that aims to connect people to their heritage. It provides advice and assistance in conserving historic buildings and engages people directly with the rich history of their city. The volunteer project is to
survey, catalogue and organise the organisation's paper and electronic records, some of which comprise interesting heritage conservation, interpretation and learning projects dating back to the early 1970s.
Based at Bakehouse Close, as well as undertaking the project, the volunteer will assist in an initial scoping exercise and help to develop a project plan to determine the breadth and estimated timescales of the project. A flexible approach is welcomed within
mutually agreed timescales.
