My guess would also be St Catherine of Alexandria. Although she normally has a wheel this is not always the case, especially in Somerset in England (according to Woodforde, Stained Glass in Somerset, 1250–1830, London, 1946 )

Best wishes.

Hi Meg,

Do you have a photo of the statue? Elin/Helena of Skövde nearly always carries a book and a sword, but unfortunately never a crown. So, I'd also assume it's Catherine of Alexandria (popular in some areas of Scandinavia).

Best wishes,

Sara

As a follow-up question, can anyone suggest the identity of a figure I assume to be a virgin martyr because of her loose hair, she wears a crown and holds a book in her right hand, the left hand once held something but it is lost (this is a wooden figure in an altarpiece). No sign of a wheel, dragon, or any such useful unique attribute!
Meg
