hi Christina,

A little while ago Oxford GLAM (Galleries, Libraries and Museums) organised a private after-hours Instagrammer event for high profile Instagrammers (mainly from London) to help with new engagement / followers. Lots of other bigger museums (Met, Wellcome, etc) have been doing this sort of thing for a while.

Best,

Helen

Hi Christina,

You might want to look at the Royal Institution and their work over the last 3-4 years on building up a huge subscriber base on YouTube:

Leading the early work here we focussed on i) defining our USP and creating content that no else could (either access to experts or visual science demos) and ii) collaborating with a range of YouTube influencers, usually tied into the growing pool of Google-backed channels like Veritasium, V-Sauce, SmarterEveryDay etc.

Cassie Williams who took on my role when I headed north has also spoken about developing the Ri audience. I think she’s on this list too. Here’s her great presentation from 2015 https://www.slideshare.net/museumscomputergroup/building-an-audience-on-youtube-cassie-williams-ukmw15

Access to celebrities is another route to building audiences that I’ve exploited – both at NMS and at BAFTA (where it’s a little easier!).

Subject: INFLUENCERS in the Museum Space: Looking for Participants

Hi everyone,

My name is Christina Lindner and I'm a postgraduate student currently working on a dissertation project about how museums can collaborate with social media influencers, a topic that I feel should be more widely delved into. I am on the tail end of completing my dissertation and am currently looking for someone to chat with about their opinions or ideas concerning using social media and particularly social media influencers in the museum space.

I could email the questions over and you can reply at your leisure. Please let me know if this would be at all possible! I would love to include some of your opinions in my dissertation, which will be published and hopefully presented at museum conferences in the near future.

I would really appreciate just a few minutes to chat about this topic and I feel that any of you would be a valuable asset to my work. Thank you for the consideration!

Best,

Christina Lindner
