I beg their pardon, Swab and Romme’s paper was published:

It has been discussed in the literature. See Gardner, CC; Gardner, G J. Bypassing Interlibrary Loan Via Twitter: An Exploration of #icanhazpdf Requests

 ALA. http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/conferences/confsandpreconfs/2015/Gardner.pdf

There was a paper on it at the 2015 CHLA conference too by Swab and Romme, but no abstract, as far as I can tell http://nlhla.chla-absc.ca/events/2015-conference/

The hashtag was first used in 2011, by a cognitive scientist, who was quoted as saying that, rather than construct an alternative document supply system, she wanted to put pressure on publishers to change their outdated model.

There certainly could be a debate about this, and Sci-Hub: it would make a good topic for one of the #ukmedlibs chats.

My own view: pragmatically, and ethics aside, neither Sci-Hub nor #icanhazpdf offer a reliable or sustainable document supply service. But the ethical issue can’t be ducked, either.

Subject: Twitter hashtag

Hello,

I’m not sure how many of you are on Twitter but i’ve just found the following hashtag and i thought it might be something we as librarians want to discuss. It’s #ICanHazPDF and basically people seem to be attaching it to tweets asking other people to give them a full text article they’re requesting. People have been using it on twitter for a little while now, and some people have been discussing it at a current conference @iflawlic. I thought it might be interesting to bring it to a wider audience to see what everyone thinks about it. People on Twitter are saying that it’s better than asking a librarian for a full text article as this method is much faster. It’s an interesting concept to use Twitter this way, what do you think?

Thanks,

Sarah
