Hi Dom,

Our top level WAYFless link works normally, but I find that if I then click on the Journals link (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journals) I get the error message. I've reported this to SD. Refreshing the page restores normal service.

And I've just discovered I can cause the same problem without invoking Shibboleth - just visiting the top level SD website from an on campus PC and clicking on the Journals link is enough to summon the error message.

Best wishes,
Trevor

Thanks, Trevor. That explains why signing in has been hit and miss. The only WAYFless link I provide on our web pages is to the top level which presumably avoids the problem with encoded escape chars.

Hi Rachel,

Proxy access is OK (for now?) at Leeds, and we have found something that can make our WAYFless Shib URL fail.

Until recently, SD journal URLs ended with the journal's ISSN, but now the ISSN is followed by "?sdc=1". If I encode this as "%3Fsdc%3D1" and add it to the end of our WAYFless URL, everything works, but without it, after the local authentication screen, SD tries to add the new characters to the redirected URL and I get an error message claiming I've tried (and failed) to sign in to a SD account. Refreshing the page displays the journal page as expected.

An example URL for us would be:
https://auth.elsevier.com/ShibAuth/institutionLogin?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fpassport01.leeds.ac.uk%2Fidp%2Fshibboleth&appReturnURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%2Fscience%2Fjournal%2F17427061
This leads to SD adding "?sdc=1" when redirecting, and the error message, but if I add "%3Fsdc%3D1" (the encoded version of "?sdc=1") to the end:
https://auth.elsevier.com/ShibAuth/institutionLogin?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fpassport01.leeds.ac.uk%2Fidp%2Fshibboleth&appReturnURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%2Fscience%2Fjournal%2F17427061%3Fsdc%3D1
I can access the journal.

Best wishes,
Trevor

Proxy access seems fine for us now but Shib is still giving an error - anyone else having this?

Elsevier's reply to my support request was not particularly helpful.

I have just e-mailed everyone I can think of at Elsevier (having finally got some blood out of the stone and an admission that this was a known issue) to suggest that in future they send out a press release to their subscribers, followed by regular progress updates. After all, we're paying a lot of £££ or $$$ for these subscriptions.

Sounds like it's starting to resolve itself though. Have yet to hear from Elsevier.

Thanks, Bethany.

Another workaround has just been suggested by Bethyn Boni, on ERIL-L:

"We've also experienced this for a long time. Our solution? Right click on the pdf icon and open it in a new tab. Voila - there it is.

Weird, but it works."

Bethyn

However, I've just tried it out on the problematic open access article I left open on IE11, and "rt-click > new tab" did not work at the article level - perhaps it works on the contents page.

I just looked at the temp. internet files and, apart from the cookies, there are a lot of JSON files dated today, event log items with no date and all sorts of other Jscript acw SSO moieties.

To add to the complications, there is a separate issue via EZproxy in that the results of searches on the new style web pages drop out of the EZproxy session.

Hi all,

On the North American front, Duke University is having trouble with ScienceDirect content both on and off campus. We believe it has something to do with Shibboleth authentication. I too have noticed the silence coming from ERIL-L, for whatever reason, but wanted to make you all aware that it doesn't seem to be a regional issue.

Hi Dom,

I suspect you may be correct about North America remaining unaffected. We have no problem downloading PDFs at the moment as we use Hosted EZProxy. The IP address for the host server is registered in the US so I'm guessing that this explains why we can download PDFs using this method.

If I go in via normal IP authentication, I am (like everyone else on this list) prompted to log in and am then presented with the:

'Sorry, your request can't be processed due to a system problem. Contact the Help Desk if the problem persists. [SD-008]'

message if I try the Institutional (Shibboleth) login.

I just tried the workaround that Helga posted but that didn't work for me either.

Paul

Good morning, Sarah,

Please advise els-support it is not just EZproxy. I'm still being challenged to sign in to download an open access PDF (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0045653517307671<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.sciencedirect.com_science_article_pii_S0045653517307671&d=DwMGaQ&c=imBPVzF25OnBgGmVOlcsiEgHoG1i6YHLR0Sj_gZ4adc&r=O6u529U80VSpFCckAIhw9ZLSx-V4iA79jzFF5SFfunE&m=rJNAokuw2QCT4yjaE1zag3fuIpQbBs3xaNMM4zZrE_4&s=XDMeTJzSXM7XPN8ICZm_GCSOdj8lwG1x3kgQlIAps7A&e=>). This problem is is affecting OpenAthens, Shibboleth and IP authn. I have a ticket: [170803-011742] but no response yet. Clearly ScienceDirect support is being swamped.

HTML access seems okay on campus.

Off campus I noted problems getting our logo to appear via Shibboleth on the evening of Tuesday 1 August and early morning Wednesday 3 August.

ERIL-L is eerily quiet on this topic so I assume other regions may be unaffected - I'll ask north American list members on ERIL-L to check PDF access later today.
