Exploring Pirandello’s Islands of the Map and Mind
13-14 October 2017

The annual conference of the Society for Pirandello Studies aims to embrace a wide variety of methods and approaches to Pirandello’s œuvre, and to bring together theatre professionals, critics and scholars representing a range of disciplines. This year, in conjunction with the Department of Italian at University College Cork and the Italian Cultural Institute in Dublin, the focus will be more international than usual because this is the penultimate event of a wider global initiative celebrating the 150th anniversary of Pirandello’s birth: Pirandello International 2017. The framework behind these events is the definition of Pirandello’s œuvre as a space of cultural negotiation that provides a new perspective on the contemporary world and culture; a space where individual points of view, cultures, and faiths are constantly negotiated, where “certainties” are called into question and where hybridity is pervasive. In this context the Society for Pirandello Studies conference focuses on exploring the “peripheries” that we find inscribed in Pirandello’s works. The “Islands” referred to in the title are both real and metaphorical, physical spaces, real or imagined, and states of mind or points of view, at once insider and outsider, and suggestive of the plurality inherent in Pirandello’s poetics.
Particularly welcome are contributions that relate Pirandello’s texts to different media and/or genres. Abstracts (in English and Italian) of c.200 words for papers of 20 minutes’ duration should be sent to Dr Enza De Francisci at[log in to unmask].

Esplorare le isole della mappa e della mente di Pirandello

Il Convegno annuale della Society for Pirandello Studies quest’anno è organizzato in collaborazione con il Dipartimento d’Italiano, University College Cork e l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Dublino. Il convegno generalmente, si pone come un necessario momento di confronto culturale per professionisti del teatro, critici e docenti, con l’obiettivo specifico di dare luogo a nuove e rinnovate letture, analisi e studi critici inerenti Pirandello e la sua Opera. Quest’anno la manifestazione è più internazionale in quanto si inserisce nel calendario degli eventi internazionali, organizzati per i 150 anni dalla nascita di Pirandello e che sono riuniti sotto il nome Pirandello International 2017.
Alla base di questa iniziativa c’è la definizione dell’opera pirandelliana come di uno spazio di negoziazione culturale che fornisce una prospettiva nuova al mondo contemporaneo e alla cultura occidentale; uno spazio dove punti di vista, culture e fedi sono costantemente negoziati, dove le certezze vengono messe in discussione; uno spazio immerso nell’ibridità.
In questa cornice critica il Convegno intende esplorare le “periferie” che troviamo descritte nell’opera pirandelliana. Le “isole” del titolo sono sia geograficamente intese che metaforiche; luoghi fisici, reali o immaginati; stati della mente e punti di vista, al contempo interni e altri, e che evocano quella pluralità insita nella poetica pirandelliana.
Particolarmente apprezzati saranno interventi che collegano testi pirandelliani ai vari media e/o generi. Gli abstract di circa 200 parole (in inglese e in italiano) per interventi della durata di 20 minuti dovranno essere inviati a Enza De Francisci [log in to unmask] entro e non oltre il 10 settembre 2017.
