Hi all,

I’m really thrilled that one of our Alternative Textbook Grant recipients just published her OER yesterday Dr. Julie Ward's project, Antología Abierta de Literature Hispana (Open Anthology of Hispanic Literature), is remarkable for a few reasons.

Dr. Ward worked with me to find classic, Spanish language texts that were out of copyright and in the public domain, and I worked with Dr. Ward and her undergraduate students doing instruction about Creative Commons licensing. These students then worked in groups to write critical editions of these texts. They researched and wrote introductions, putting each work into historical context and providing background information about the author, and they provided insight into ways the texts could be interpreted. They found openly licensed images to accompany each text, and then they compiled the text into this one anthology (with additional assistance from two student editors).

Additionally, Dr. Ward worked with the Rebus Community, where you can read more about the project. We are actively seeking others teaching college level Hispanic Literature courses to implement a critical edition assignment with the goal of expanding AntologĂa Abierta de Literature Hispana. As you can read on the Rebus site, there will be instructor resources available for implementing this assignment. If you have faculty members on your campuses who might be interested in this, please have them sign up with Rebus.

Dr. Ward, Rachel Bernstein (one of her participating undergraduate students), Cody Taylor (Emerging Technologies Librarian at OU), and I will be presenting about this project in greater detail at OpenEd ’17. I sincerely hope to see you there, because this was a truly incredible experience for everyone who participated.

In the mean time, another open textbook is born!

Best Regards,
Jen
