Hi James,

I had a quick peek in our library.  Cadw was formed in 1984, and I have found official reports that refer to the phrase ‘Scheduled Ancient Monuments’ from that date.  They also use the phrase ‘Schedule of Ancient Monuments’.  I wonder whether the former was derived from the latter?  You would need to look at the official records from the Departmental predecessor bodies before that to see how far back you could trace the official government usage of the term.  A trawl through the annual reports from the Ancient Monuments Boards might also be instructive.  I suspect usage goes back to the 1970s at least.

Within Cadw, the term Scheduled Ancient Monument fell out of use around 2012, when we commenced work on what became the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016.  We only use the phrase ‘Scheduled Monument’ now, or ‘Ancient Monument’ more broadly with respect to certain definitions and powers, for example provision of Ancient Monument grants under Sn 24 of the AM&AA Act 1979.  However, usage of the term Scheduled Ancient Monument is well established amongst staff and we still informally refer to them as SAMs.  An Inspector’s prerogative…!

Best wishes,

Jon

This may be a rather arcane variant on the question, fit only for people who haven’t got enough work to do, but does anyone know when the term scheduled ancient monument was first used? As far as I know it doesn’t appear in any of the legislation, so someone must have coined it.

We stopped using the 'A' in the MPP very early on, certainly by the early-mid 1990s when we started looking at WWII sites.

Yes I think it must have been about then Vanessa - the SAM label certainly didn’t make much sense when applied to 1980s Cold War sites – missile shelters at Greenham Common, scheduled on 3/3/2003 https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1021040 - any advance for an earlier scheduling date of a late 20th century monument?

Cruise missile shelter complex, Greenham Common Airbase List Entry Summary. This monument is scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 ...

Agreed but I do recall Historic England (or rather English Heritage as was then) at some point maybe around 2003-5 dropping ‘Scheduled Ancient Monument’ from their publications and replacing the term with ‘Scheduled Monument’.

Presumably as more ‘modern’ monuments were being placed on the schedule? I vaguely recall changing the terminology I used accordingly around this time.

It’s sloppy wording. As far as I’m aware there never was such a thing as a SAM; the 1979 Act only refers to Ancient Monuments and Scheduled Monuments (or perhaps just to the Schedule).

A bit of an early, Friday afternoon type question,

Can anyone give a vague date when Scheduled Ancient Monuments stopped being called that and became known as just Scheduled Monuments?

Just curious as I still see people calling them SAMs in reports now and again
