Dear all,

I'm so glad this subject has been brought back to life.

At some point, our conversations focused mostly on English as a second language and learning strategies, but at the expense of other – equally important – topics.

I love doing some little writing experiments, and this article is a result of my experience:

Ayala, R. A., Fealy, G. M., Vanderstraeten, R., & Bracke, P. (2014). Academisation of nursing: An ethnography of social transformations in Chile. International Journal of Nursing Studies, 51(4), 603-611.

Some use narratives and storytelling as part of their corpus. But some of us use them as a way of communicating scientific results. If somebody else here is into it, I'd appreciate keeping in touch with them.

Best,

Ric.

Dear people,

Indeed, this is a rich topic, and I see that most of the running seems to be in scientific fields; I recall years ago reading that the oral discourse of science is full of story, in stark contrast to its written reporting. (And I see another example of this interest at Keele, https://www.keele.ac.uk/lpdc/learningteaching/teachinginnovationprojectsscheme/onceuponamolecule/)

I worked in a Faculty of Humanities and Social Science so my perspective was different, and I can offer some very helpful references at the end of an article I wrote a few years ago, “Telling” insights from experience: Establishing resonance with readers, theory, and participants" in the Journal of Academic Language and Learning 8 (1) 2014, available at http://journal.aall.org.au/index.php/jall/issue/view/17 .

What a timely and important discussion topic! Several of us in the U.S. are presenting a workshop about story-telling at the International Writing Centers Association conference in November. Story-telling in terms of sharing stories about instructional strategies and/or insights gathered from our own experience in teaching writing is often derided as simply “lore” and not valued. That view values research findings much more than story-telling (or lore) . Our workshop discussion will focus on what we learn from story-telling and why, how, or if we should value such story-telling.

I hope to suggest at the workshop that story-telling is valuable and can also be a form of research. One source I found about this may interest others: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/13401458_Story_Telling_Is_It_Really_Research

I’m curious to know what others mean by story-telling and how it is valued.

Many thanks for drawing attention to what is an inherent feature of academic writing, not just in science - I look forward to following up the references you have shared so far.

The following blog post, specifically, addresses story-telling in academic scientific writing:

Hopefully, this can be a fruitful addition to Anne's search for evidence of story-telling in academic writing - I would be keen to receive any further follow-ups to this thread, also off-list, depending on how interested others are, so please feel free to include me in subsequent conversations.

All the best,

Hi Anne,

As the references you cite probably support, storytelling is a fairly common  metaphor when scientists/engineers talk about how they discuss their research. The attached book chapter includes some discussion of the use of storytelling in engineersą writing for publication. I have other data on this exact topic that I havenąt had time to write about yet.
Empirical research is one way to address the question of what storytelling Śdoesą to science Š Thank you for including those references!

All the best,
Mary Jane

Dear colleagues
Over the past year, I've been investigating story-telling in academic
writing in an effort to decide to what extent and how I should be
introducing it in my academic writing workshops in Germany. I know that
the issue is being debated, and, for those interested, I have added at
the end of this mail four books and three links I have found on the
topic .
In discussions I've had in Germany, I have met people who are for and
against more story-telling in science (the former mainly saying it is
making science texts more reader-friendly/memorable, the latter
generally stating that it is making science reporting less precise). I
would like to know what other members of the EATAW community are
currently experiencing in their work as teachers of academic writing in
a multitude of languages. To start off the discussion, I therefore have
the following questions

1) Is the topic of story-telling in science writing being discussed in
your country?
2) If so, is there generally a positive or negative attitude towards it?
3) If the attitude is negative, what reasons are being given?
4) Do you think the attitude may be related to the language being used
for writing about the research?

I'm grateful for any thoughts on this. I'll try and put together a
summary of the ideas I receive and make it available to the group.
Many thanks
Anne
