I have just uploaded to the front page of  http://fooddeserts.org/ a free sample of a map of historical changes to the UK.  It can be accessed from the 'Bookshop' link at the top of the page.

Essentially this map shows, with dates, the changes to the UK road, rail and canal network, projected railways,  the progress of urbanisation as at 1900, 1920, 1940, 1975, 2000 and later, rail-associated industrial uses (e.g. collieries), and changes to the coastline. So far as I am aware, no such map exists, for the whole of the UK.

It was created by selective digitisation of a 1940s UK atlas, with further information added from 1900, 1920, 1975 atlases and 1940, modern, OS maps.

This is a free sample map of some 700 sq km of the north Lincolnshire area, from Goole through Scunthorpe to Grimsby/Cleethorpes.  Further mapping may be posted if there is an interest in this type of cartography.  In return for free access to this sample I would very much appreciate any feedback on this map (how it could be improved, what's missing, for example) - also any indication of what you might pay for a tile size of 2,500 sq km of these maps.   if there's no market for these maps, or no wtp, that's fine - but any indication would be very useful.
