Booking is now open for the Royal Society of Biology's popular training courses on science podcast production and presentation skills. Science Podcast Production Workshop - 11 October Start time: 09:30 End time: 16:30 Where: Royal Society of Biology, Charles Darwin House, 12 Roger Street, London, WC1N 2JU Award-winning science broadcaster Richard Hollingham presents this introductory hands-on course on how to podcast - from getting good quality sound and content - to getting your podcast online and heard. Following the success of previous courses in 2016 and 2017, the Society continues to offer this one-day introductory course, for those interested in communicating science via podcast. Podcasting may sound effortless but it requires plenty of effort to produce something that sounds natural, engaging and informative. The aim of this course is to get people understanding audio recording, how to get your science across, and what works best when there are no visuals. Richard explores different styles of podcasting and during the day small groups will work in teams as reporter/ interviewee/ producer to produce their own short audio piece. Audio equipment is supplied (but feel free to bring your own recording device if you have one) and, though not an editing course, we will cover the theoretical basics of audio editing and recording. The course will make people think about how best to communicate science and help you appreciate what it's like to be on both sides of the microphone. About the Trainer Richard Hollingham studied Applied and Environmental Biology at the University of York. As a BBC producer, reporter and presenter, he developed extensive experience in communicating the biosciences to general audiences. Past projects include presenting the BBC World Service environment programme One Planet and the acclaimed Planet Earth Podcast for the Natural Environment Research Council. Richard produces and presents science programmes for Radio 4, World Service and Radio 3, writes for BBC Future and is co-presenter/ producer of the award-winning Space Boffins Podcast. This half-day course is for those who have had little experience of giving presentations. What does this course cover? - Practical exercise on personal presentation and body language - Structuring your presentation - Uses and abuses of visual aids with a focus on Powerpoint - Meeting the needs of your audience The course will be run in an interactive style, where participation of course attendees will be encouraged. Course trainer Course tutor Sue Smith is professor in medical education and director of teaching at the National Heart and Lung Institute, a constituent of the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London. She graduated with a first class BSc pharmacology from the University of Liverpool before moving to London to study for a part-time PhD in biochemistry, investigating the effects of tobacco smoke on proteolytic activity at the lung surface. In 2007 she was the recipient of a Rector's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Holding leadership roles relating to educational activity provides her with excellent opportunities to undertake educational research. One of her current interests is in understanding how we can help undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees learn more effectively.
