medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Hi everyone,

A half day in a good library, and I have the solution. The “Prophetia de Francis” is NOT a text, but a reference to a statement about the kings of the Franks in pseudo-Augustine, “De antichristo liber unus,” PL 40:1131-1134 (the statement is on col. 1133). The text is actually by Adso Adso Dervensis, De ortu et tempore Antichristi (ed. Daniel Verhelst, CCCM 45), but has also been ascribed to Hrabanus (1505), Augustine (1516, ascription rejected 1529), to Alcuin, to Albuin, and to several others.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Hi,

In PL 112, col. 1507C, Migne includes reference to a text called “Prophetia de Francis”, with a cross-reference to “Opera sancti Augustini, tom. VI, col. 1133.” Despite all efforts, I have been unable to identify this particular text, nor where in the works of Augustine it actually appears. Col. 1133 of “tom. VI” in Migne’s reprint of the Maurist edition (=PL 40), comes in the middle of a pseudo Augustinian text called “De antichristo liber unus” (PL 40:1131-1134). This text does cite variants from Hrabanus (e.g. col. 1131, n. 8; col. 1134, n. 1), and it is true that a text was ascribed to Hrabanus by the 17th cent. editor (see Georg Colvener, Opera omnia [Cologne, 1626], 6:177). But except for this mention, there is no other mention of a “Prophetia de Francis” in the works of Hrabanus, nor in the works of Augustine (pseudo or otherwise) [using the PLD; CETEDOC is no help either].

Puzzling, at least for now. If someone can identify this text, or point me in the right direction I would be me most grateful.
