Browser Support
We use the W3Schools Browser Explorer as well as client analytics to determine which browsers are used by the majority of visitors.
Our development process will provide a site that is compatible* with the latest two versions of Firefox, Safari and Chrome and the current and previous version of Internet Explorer / Edge.
We design all our sites to be responsive in nature which means they will also render correctly on mobile devices, but we will discuss the specifics of this with you during the project.
If there are specific browser requirements for you and your business which fall outside the list above, this will need to be factored in as part of the quotation and will likely incur additional cost.
( * Please note that “browser compatibility” is not the same as "looks exactly the same in all browsers". Our sites will work as outlined above, but will not appear 100% the same.)
Hello.Chrome, Safari, and Firefox auto update so just ask for the latest version which is what most developers will default to - anything generic built for the latest will work fine for the previous couple of builds. Edge also auto updates. For IE it's a business and cost analysis decision how far back you want to go and it's a minefield I'd prefer to discuss face to face rather than email! But if you can take the opportunity to kill anything earlier than IE10 unless the thing you are building is basic.It's also worth noting a grade and x grade. A grade means everything including fancy transitions and interactions must work. X grade means it works but without the latest in interactions and effects. Has anyone recently had to specify design requirements for browser compatibility? i.e. which is the earliest version of each of the major browsers that you require your site to support?
Below, if it makes it through Jiscmail, is a table of stats for 2017 to date for IWM, covering all browser versions that have 1% or more of the share.
I know that’s an over-simplistic question, so if people are aware of other resources that are available, or have comments about specific features that were introduced/dropped with certain releases, then I’m happy to hear all arguments! For example I’m struck by the figure for Chrome 44 and 49, but I suspect these aren’t hugely different from modern versions.
