Hi all,

To follow up on Mike’s comment, at BGS we are using the excellent Open Data available from Ordnance Survey extensively alongside the licensed map series which we subscribe to. This can be teamed up with QGIS (also free) to make an excellent system.

There are also a number of resources like the National Library of Scotland’s map images which my volunteers use to get grid references.

From previous experience, tonight’s webinar should be good – I will be watching the recorded version.

Simon

Dear All,

I make 8 – 9 am PDT as equivalent to 16:00 – 17:00 BST, so fairly convenient in the UK.

Incidentally, these Webinars are all recorded and downloadable from the iDigBio website – an absolutely invaluable resource! – see https://www.idigbio.org/content/darwin-core-hour-webinar-series

BGS are heavily involved in geo-referencing, as many of our collections predate British National Grid and have locations such as “behind post office, Durness” (Collected 1884, 1885 - now long closed) and “Spy burn 17 chains NE of Spy Wood Cottage, one and seven sixteenths of a mile SE Chirbury Shropshire” (Syntype of Leptograptus validus, collected 1892)

Best wishes,

Mike.

Many thanks Deborah for sharing this interesting link.

I’d be very interested to hear from anyone in the UK currently carrying out georeferencing on their collection data.

All the best,

Giles

Hey GCG!

Do you do a lot of georeferencing when digitizing your geological and related collections? Or, perhaps you are training others to do so? This Darwin Core Hour may be of special interest and relevance to you.

One week from today - find out precisely where you are - via Darwin Core Hour #6:
Where am I, exactly? Darwin Core Georeferencing Terms

Abstract:
In this chapter of the Darwin Core Hour series, we will look in depth at two Darwin Core georeferencing terms that can be confusing when sharing location data: coordinateUncertaintyInMeters and coordinatePrecision. We will cover these specific Location terms, along with related terms needed to understand their definitions, importance, and uses.  Finally, we will use these terms to demonstrate the process by which community feedback leads to improved Darwin Core documentation. Please bring your insights, community experience, and questions surrounding locality data issues.
