Last chance to apply for the following HLF funded archivist post at Surrey History centre:

The March of the Women: Surrey’s Road to the Vote Project Archivist vacancy at Surrey History Centre

Surrey Heritage (Surrey County Council): Project Archivist (fixed term for 18 months). Full Time, 36hrs per week.

Based at: Surrey History Centre, Woking, Surrey
Salary: Grade S7 £24,697-£28,590

Following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project entitled ‘The March of the Women: Surrey’s Road to the Vote', Surrey Heritage has a vacancy for a project archivist. The project will celebrate Surrey's hugely significant role in the campaign for women's suffrage. The county was home to many key activists and local groups on all sides of the fierce debate over several decades and was the scene of such iconic events as the death of Emily Davison at the 1913 Epsom Derby and the blowing up of the house of David Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in Walton on the Hill.

The campaign has left a rich archival legacy and the project archivist will, with the aid of volunteers, preserve, make accessible through cataloguing, explore and exploit unique manuscript and contemporary published sources held at Surrey History Centre and in museums across the county so that they can illuminate the unique, local dimension of the national struggle.  Drawing on these discoveries, the gripping story will be brought to different audiences, including students, local groups, researchers and the general public through a range of events and different media and in locations across Surrey. By the project’s conclusion at the end of 2018 awareness of how this momentous historical milestone came to pass will be enhanced, its enduring significance better understood and its documentary legacy better preserved and rendered far more accessible. The post will be supported by the project team, including a dedicated project officer to be recruited later this year.
