Organisers and Instructors: Kimberley Goldsmith, PhD and Ben Carter, PhD

Guest Instructors: James Wason, PhD and Michael Grayling, PhD, Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit

This 3 day course is aimed at post-graduate research students and researchers engaged in the conduct of RCTs within mental health, and would be particularly relevant for individuals planning to undertake a fellowship or post-graduate work involving clinical research.
The course will provide a comprehensive introduction to trial design features used to mitigate bias, important aspects of trial design, conduct, analysis and reporting, and challenges and solutions for conducting RCTs in mental health in particular. Throughout the course the emphasis will be on practical issues faced by researchers in the conduct of RCTs in mental health, and participants will be provided with skills to design and conduct rigorous RCTs in this specific research area.

One highlight of the course will be a session introducing adaptive designs and stepped wedge trials delivered by James Wason and Michael Grayling of the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit.

An undergraduate degree and introductory level statistics knowledge is required. Some sessions of the course will use the statistical packages Stata and SPSS, so at least intermediate level knowledge of one of these software programmes is advised.

The course will be free for IoPPN staff and students (please ensure you use the discount codes provided via the prospectus link above) and £300 for external participants, with a 15% discount for non-IoPPN King’s College London staff.
