We are changing from volumetric to weighing. We receive full collections from all users in our Health Board area, but for referral tests we are usually sent an aliquot by the referring lab.

Ian has just saved me some typing as his answers mirror our practice too.

Dear Ian/Suzanne

I am interested to know how many of you measure 24 hour urine volume using the weighing technique (using urine SG to calculate volume) or volumetric using a measuring cylinder.
We weigh them.

I would also like to know how you receive the 24 hour urine sample collections from peripheral hospitals or clinics? Do you receive the whole 24 hour collection or an aliquot together with the 24 hour volume? We receive the entire collection.

If you receive an aliquot who measures the 24 hour volume, BMS, nurse or other?
NA

What do you instruct your patients to do if the container you provide is not sufficient to collect all of the urine passed in 24 hours?
We use 5L containers - so we don’t come across this very often - but if we knew a patient had polyuria we would provide 2 containers and then combine them in the lab when we get them back.

Regards

Ian
