I have been asked by one of our Directors of Education to investigate gender bias on assessment types.  We know that there are some concerns regarding MCQs where this format may favour male students, although the literature appears to conclude that good design of both the questions and the marking criteria can negate most of the problems.  We are also keen to explore similar problems with other assessment modes, are there other forms of assessment that tend to favour one gender over the other?  I am specifically interested in the mode of assessment rather than bias from the marker.

 

I would be grateful if anyone could point me towards any appropriate literature.
