The OCLC Research Library Partnership has several upcoming webinars and events related to scholarly communication topics, as well as past and current research efforts. Take note of the upcoming events below:

1. Webinar on more accurately measuring item downloads from institutional repositories

Register

  • Kenning Arlisch, Montana State University
  • Jeff Mixter, OCLC Research

Thursday, July 6, 2017 12:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (New York, GMT-04:00)

Researchers from Montana State University, OCLC Research, the University of New Mexico and the Association of Research Libraries have developed a new web service that accurately measures item downloads from institutional repositories (IR).

The web service called RAMP (Repository Analytics and Metrics Portal) represents a dramatic improvement in web analytics. The researchers have demonstrated that page-tagging analytics methods, such as Google Analytics, typically undercount item downloads from IR because they are not designed to measure non-HTML file downloads, while log file analytics typically over-count due to enormous robot traffic. This webinar will be of interest to those who work with institutional repositories, those seeking to understand how and what is “counted” in web environments, and those who are considering the future of library metrics.

The research was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a grant proposal submitted by the partners in 2014 titled Measuring Up: Assessing Accuracy of Reported Use and Impact of Digital Repositories. An article reporting the research appears in Library Hi Tech Volume 35 Issue 1 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1108/LHT-11-2016-0122).

2.  Webinar on Policy realities in research data management

Register

·         Heidi Imker, Director of the Research Data Service (RDS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

·         Jacquelijn Ringersma, Head of Digital Production Centre, Wagenigen University & Research

Tuesday, July 25, 2017 10:00 am Eastern Daylight Time (New York, GMT-04:00)

An important and often overlooked part of research data management service provision by libraries is policy engagement, including the examination and support for diverse local, academic, disciplinary, funder-driven, national, and even international policies. In this webinar presentation, we will focus on how two research universities are developing RDM policies for accession, use, and preservation, as well as how they provide support for academic policies such as DMP requirements for doctoral students.

This webinar complements the four-part series of reports by OCLC Research entitled, “The Realities of Research Data Management,” in which findings are based on case studies of four institutions, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Wageningen University & Research. This webinar will be of interest to library leaders, repository managers, data curators, and anyone interested in research support services for data curation.

3. Recent publication of note from OCLC Research: “Librarians’ perspectives on the factors influencing research data management programs”

http://www.oclc.org/research/news/2017/02-23.html

In the article, titled "Librarians' perspectives on the factors influencing research data management programs," Ixchel Faniel and Lynn Connaway examine factors that influence librarians' ability to support researchers' needs. Findings from interviews with 36 library professionals in the US identify five major factors of influence: 1) human resources; 2) communication, coordination and collaboration; 3) technical resources; 4) leadership support; and 5) researchers' perceptions of the library. Faniel and Connaway give context to librarians' role in campus RDM and the emerging research around this topic, and then explore in depth the findings that show how different aspects of the above five factors facilitate or constrain RDM activity.
