Message from the MIST mailing list.

Dear colleagues,

A final reminder that the deadline for voting in the MIST Council election is on Monday evening. You should all have received a voting link, and anyone who hadn't voted by the middle of last week should also have received an automated reminder. I know that some of the first round of emails were held back by spam filters, but to my knowledge this has now been resolved. If you haven't received a voting link and would like to vote, please let me know ASAP so we can resolve it before Monday.

Thanks!

Rob

Subject: MIST Council election

Message from the MIST mailing list.

Dear colleagues,

We received three candidates for the two positions on MIST Council, who are (in alphabetical order):

Jonathan Rae, Mullard Space Science Laboratory
Jasmine Sandhu, Mullard Space Science Laboratory
Chris Scott, University of Reading

All three candidates have submitted a short statement which you can read below.

You will shortly receive (or may already have received) an email with an individual link to cast your vote, so please keep an eye out for that. The candidates' statements are also available on that web page - just click on the candidates' names.

You can vote for up to two candidates; this has to be done at the same time - once you have cast a vote, the link expires. You will receive an automated email confirming the vote(s) you have case. The poll will close at 23:59 BST on 3rd July, and the result will be announced at the MIST business meeting at NAM on the 4th (and then via the MIST mailing list).

If you have any technical problems or other queries, please email me! Please do not reply directly to the email containing your voting link it's a dummy address and all mail is filed in /dev/null.

Best wishes,

Rob

Candidates' statements:

Jonathan Rae [MSSL]

I am a Reader in Space Plasma Physics at MSSL/UCL, with primary interest in the terrestrial magnetosphere and ionosphere, with additional research interests in the solar wind and outer planets. During my time on MIST Council I have sought to work with UKSP to ensure MIST Science returns as a core part of our Introductory and Advanced Summer Schools, helped re-implement the External Geophysics Forum at RAS, and sought to strengthen the important links between our community and RCUK councils. I think that it is vital that we continue to grow as a community by the recruitment and retention of talented PhD students through Centres for Doctoral Training and Doctoral Training Programmes. If elected, I would continue to work towards securing a meaningful role for MIST science in existing, or indeed new, doctoral programmes.

Jasmine Sandhu [MSSL]

I am a post-doctoral research associate at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL, with a research focus on magnetospheric physics. I hope to work with the MIST council to increase diversity and representation within the MIST community at all levels, and to promote visibility of our science outside of the MIST community through participation in outreach activities. For example, I hope to develop an outreach programme focused on coordinated events across MIST institutions, targeted at engaging and involving underrepresented groups, and using social media platforms to effectively promote MIST activities and research to the wider community.

Chris Scott (formerly Davis) [Reading]

I have worked within the MIST community in varying roles since completing my PhD at Southampton in 1993 comparing EISCAT radar and UCL optical data. I then joined the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory where I worked within the EISCAT support group, managed the UK ionospheric monitoring programme and latterly worked as the Project Scientist for the UK cameras on the STEREO spacecraft. In 2013 I moved to Reading University where I am Professor in Space and Atmospheric Physics. The MIST community has supported me throughout my career to date and I would welcome the opportunity to help MIST researchers with the opportunities and challenges we now face.
