The Hakluyt Society has announced the first of a new series of biennial symposia. The inaugural topic will be: 'Trading Companies and Travel Literature'.

The symposium will take place in the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, part of the Medway Campus of the University of Kent, 11-12 September 2017.

The topic touches on the interests of historians of science, so those concerned with travel, encounter and knowledge of the natural and human world accumulated by trading companies, might want to attend.

For details of the programme and registration, see:

Note that the registration fee is reduced from £60 to £30, if you first join the Society, and in fact is free for student members, whose Society subscription is itself half the regular fee (the regular fee also being £60; all members receive the Society's published volumes of primary travel accounts, many of which have science content).
