medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I looked at Juan de Torquemada's defense of the Revelations, written at Basel, in which the closest he comes to this topic is a brief discussion of whether mortals can visually see the immortal.

In her introduction to the translation of the Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden, Bridget Morris comments that those who defended Birgitta during the questioning of her canonization at the Councils of Constance and Basel “thought it more prudent to say that the Revelations were ‘about’ the revelations of St. Birgitta, rather than directly labeling them as ‘Revelations.’”  She refers in particular to the writings in defense of Birgitta by Heymericus de Campo.

Can someone help me with this distinction between the text as revelation and the text as about revelations?  Is the point to distance Birgitta’s Revelations from scriptural revelation—to say that her words themselves do not have the status of revealed text?  Was this distinction ever made in reference to the writings of anyone else, or was it peculiar to the controversies  over Birgitta?

Thanks!

Tom
