medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Jane, you are correct. It was a dream of Bishop Oliver King and he does indeed have a rebus on the left hand side facing the west front. And thank you James Bugslag, Carlos Sastre, and Max Schmitz, for your wonderful suggestions and pointers. These are, however, to painted images, although I haven't yet accessed , Christian Heck's work. But Jacob's Ladder is far older than this and I was wondering if there was a wider sculptural echo on the facades of other cathedrals. Maybe not?

As I understand the Abbey Guide ;) it references a dream of Bishop Oliver King (for whom see the rebus on the west front).

But I may be wrong.

Dear List,

I am currently researching the sculptural display of Jacob's Ladder on the western end of Bath Abbey. There are precious few secondary sources on this rendition - James Kugel in 1995 and David C. Steimetz in 1986 - but the sculptural work seems to be the original from its rebuild in 1499.  I know that Jacob's Ladder has been rendered many times in medieval and early modern paintings and twentieth century cathedrals have often built small stone ladders in their entrances. I would have thought, however, that Jacob's Ladder would have appeared on other medieval and early modern cathedral facades but I can't seem to find any other ones. I find this is surprising but I am obviously not looking in the right areas. Does anyone on the list know of any other examples?

Many thanks in advance,
Darrelyn Gunzburg
