Dear MeCCSA,

This year Canterbury Anifest, 29th-30th September 2017, celebrates its 10th anniversary! Here are a few reasons why you should consider getting involved/attending:

SPEAKERS:

The festival will welcome guest speakers Tom Sito (an animation legend talking about Disney and many other things), Jim Parkyn (Senior Model Maker at Aardman), Samantha Moore (award-winning animation documentarian), and Tom Box (Co-Founder and Director of Blue-Zoo Animation Studio).

INTERNATIONAL FILM COMPETITION:

The festival also includes an international short animated film competition. Costing £5 to enter, the award categories include:

Best British Film

Best International Film

Best Student Film

Best Animation*

Best Art Design*

Best Sound*

Audience Choice*

*All shortlisted films will automatically be entered in these categories. All shortlisted films will be screened during the festival weekend.

Full submission details can be found here: https://www.canterburyanifest.com/awards

But, in short, if you have students producing animated work less than 10 minutes long, please do encourage them to submit their films for consideration.

SYMPOSIUM:

Lastly, we also have a full-day symposium as part of the festival, themed around the subject of Walt Disney’s Snow White and Seven Dwarfs (1937) – a film that also celebrates a significant anniversary this year: it turns 80!

This interdisciplinary symposium invites proposals for twenty-minute presentations (traditional papers and practice-based research are equally welcome) focussing on any aspect of the film that interrogates the enduring qualities that have marked its animated legacy. Topics might include, but are not limited to:

Speakers are invited to submit a 250-word abstract and short biography to BOTH Dr Bryan Hawkins ([log in to unmask]) and Dr Christopher Holliday ([log in to unmask]).

The deadline for proposals is 15 August 2017.

Maybe I’ll see you in Canterbury in September for Anifest!

Oh, and if you would like a printable poster for Anifest to put up in your department please drop me an email and I will send one over to you directly.

Best,

Chris
