Hello,

We have some experience of sending books to low income countries and this is unfortunately a tricky one in terms of logistics

At the end of the day it comes down to being able to establish a partnership with a local organisation who can arrange to receive your books and/or finding someone in the UK working with a project who is travelling to that country and willing to take the books (some airlines allow additional baggage for this purpose).

Some couriers have offered charitable rates (it has been a few years since we used them)

DHL –offer charity rates to those working with THET.

Sayvatrek – can arrange charity shipping. [log in to unmask]"> [log in to unmask]

THET have a grant application process if you build a partnership with a developing country (http://www.thet.org/)

Kind Regards,

Some years ago we had a visit from the librarian of a medical library in Sri Lanka.  We said that we would worry about donating out-of-date text books to other countries but she was clear that any books are better than no books at all.  Having reached that point, we’re then faced with the cost of sending them.  Who pays for the transport?

Regards,

Wendy

Subject: Withdrawn books to support nurse education in southern India

Dear all

I know this crops up from time to time both as a question and indeed as an ethical issue.

I have this enquiry from a colleague in Health Education England, who has visited a nurse education college in southern India,

When I visited the nursing school at Apollo Hyderabad, we visited the library and they showed me their books, which they treated like some of their most pressure possessions. I recognised some from the 80's when I was a student We update and dispose of massive numbers of books every year when the libraries in the Trusts and HEIs update Is there anything we could do to donate  them to new homes in LMIC's. I was rather hoping that we could support some of the organisations that the Global Health Exchange is already engaged with in various schemes of work.

It would require some experience around the logistics though.”

Advice and suggestions from both NHS and higher education colleagues would be very welcome.

Thankyou,

David
