The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures at the University of Liverpool wishes to appoint a permanent, teaching and research Lecturer in German or Italian Studies with specific expertise in Post-1945 European Politics or History as one of three new permanent posts in Modern languages and Cultures. These appointments represent a significant investment in Modern Languages at Liverpool and are framed with respect to the department’s ambitious future plans and reflect the strategic development of departmental, school, faculty and university research priorities.

 

You will have a PhD in a relevant subject with a particular specialism (German or Italian Studies, Politics, or History) and a growing record of publications of international excellence. Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests relate closely to at least one of the university/faculty strategic research themes: Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, Medical Humanities and Social Sciences, Cities, Security and Conflict, Slavery and Unfree Labour, Heritage, Children and Childhood.

 

You will need to be able to contribute to core teaching in German or Italian Studies, including some contribution to target-language teaching, and to core teaching in Politics and/or History, preferably from a comparative perspective.

 

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) currently comprises over forty academic staff (including language tutors), and teaches some 400 (FTE) students every year. Our constituent subject areas are: Chinese Studies, Film Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, and Iberian and Latin American Studies.

 

German Studies at Liverpool focuses its research on the twentieth century and contemporary period from a broad range of cultural, historical and linguistic perspectives. Staff research and publish on the cultural history of the twentieth century in Germany; contemporary German-language literature and film; German sociolinguistics and pedagogy; and translation. Our work is situated within Faculty themes of Heritage and Conflict, and intersects with wider, multidisciplinary areas of research such as periodical studies, museum studies, women’s writing, and visual cultures. Our teaching focuses primarily on the twentieth century, as well as contributing to a range of departmental themed modules on film and literature, as well as memory and musealisation.
