The School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University (Republic of Ireland) is pleased to announce that a PhD/MLitt Studentship will be available for one student intending to commence PhD, PhD-track or MLitt studies in October 2017. For German, applications are welcome in the following research fields within the disciplines of Applied Linguistics and German / Swiss / Austrian Literary or Cultural Studies : • Approaches to Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures (DaF) • German and English as global languages • Intercultural communication and intercultural competence • Language and education policy and planning • Second Language Acquisition • Translation Studies • Contemporary Women’s Writing in German • Representations of mothers, mothering and motherhood in German culture • Islam in German literature • Writing on art • Colonial and postcolonial discourses • Travel writing • German historical thought from Enlightenment historiography to Historicism We offer: • Access to intensive, personalised and interdisciplinary supervision by members of the German Studies department and the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. • An annual stipend of €9,002 in addition to a waiver of EU fees (approx. €5,500). • A well-developed structured PhD programme for your ongoing professional training. • A supportive, collegial, dynamic and friendly working environment in one of the most diverse and research-active German Studies departments in the country comprising Germanists from diverse cultural backgrounds. • The opportunity to gather varied and extensive teaching experience in language, literature, culture and linguistics modules during the course of your PhD/MLitt studies (up to 8 contact hours weekly during term time). • Inclusion in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures’ (SMLLC) research seminars, which run throughout each semester and invite guest lecturers to share their expertise with the departments in the School. • The opportunity to gain experience in the organisation of, and participation in, national and international conferences. • Active mentorship to assist you in further developing your profile as an academic and professional for the competitive international labour market. You have: • A Masters degree with at least a 2.1 in German Studies or Applied Linguistics, or equivalent (e.g. Magister, Staatsexamen). In exceptional cases, candidates who do not fulfil this requirement may be accepted.
