Hehe, part of me likes the idea of historic landfills represented by pumpkins! On a more serious note, the areas of landfill are currently presented in polygon format to represent presumed landfill boundaries, rather than as points. Anything that might lead to inaccuracy or an un-necessarily high level of uncertainty in data quality should be avoided particularly given the potential liability connotations. This risk would need to be acknowledged and very carefully managed. If users were happy to accept landfills represented as, say, pumpkins then maybe WIMBY could be saved. As money is clearly so tight, perhaps a group of keen primary school age Minecrafters could be mustered to provide free upkeep and maintenance. As to why it’s ending - I gather down the grapevine that the software / system used to run WIMBY is pretty antiquated. While the best thing would be to regenerate it, the time/cost implications of doing so have been weighed up as being too high (although I’m sure most of you would disagree). We would be able to get the information directly from information requests made to the EA instead – but certainly it would be significantly slower and less convenient than by doing it ourselves.
