In the particular case that you quote where you are talking about the official name of an organisation you should stick with that name, no inverted commas etc. The name should be as it was at the time. You may want to note (now known as ….) but we’re on very wobbly and confusing ground when we start changing the name of organisations. If we did this in cases where organisations have split and amalgamated etc chaos would ensue. As they say, provenance is essential, and if we change the name of the organisation, even if we do hide the original name somewhere in the content, we loose that.

Subject: Use of terms which have become offensive.

Dear All,

I was wondering what would be best practice when it comes to the use of terms which are now considered offensive.

I am currently cataloguing correspondence with an organisation which used a medical term in its title but which later became pejorative.

What best practice to include this word in title, with or without inverted commas? Would it be better to use an alternative title which uses the modern title  and then include the old title of the organisation within the scope and content?

Regards,

Michael Kelliher,
